Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz crystal.
The name 'Amethyst' historically came from the ancient greek work 'amethystos' meaning 'not intoxicated' which is a reference to the ancients belief that Amethysts protected the wearer or user from intoxication. Supposedly, according to ancient greek lore, the beautiful violet colour of amethyst comes from when the god of wine, Dionysis, poured wine over clear quartz.
Medieval soldiers also wore amethyst as they believed that it would help them keep a clear head during battle, and would help to heal and protect them.
During the middle ages amethysts were used a symbol of royalty, it was also seen as one of the 'cardinal gems' in that it was one of the five gemstones considered precious above all others.
Amethyst is a mediative stone which promotes calming, balance & peace. The ancient greek belief of amethyst promoting sobriety was not wrong, in a metaphorical sense at least, as it helps the wearer to think more clearly & to possess a mind not clouded by too much emotion meaning an amethyst can help the user to see a situation with more clarity.
Leonardo Da Vinci was well known to believe that amethyst had the power to enhance intelligence & to drive away evil thoughts.
Amethyst also has a gentle, soothing energy, which can promote peacefulness & contentment. It can help bring about deep inner strength & emotional stability during difficult times. It is also excellent to bring about a peaceful nights sleep with pleasant dreams.
Amethyst is a stone which is good for many different situations, for example; in love & relationships it can help you understand your own needs & desires within a relationship. Or in a work situation it can help with productivity & help with professional relationships. Or for travellers on a journey it can help keep you safe.
